Quick Facts About Prostate Cancer

  • Prostate Cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among men in the U.S. and in New Mexico.

  • African American men have the highest prostate cancer incidence rates in the world.

  • A first-degree relative with prostate cancer almost doubles a man’s risk of developing the disease.

  • Men over age 55 account for 95% of New Mexicans diagnosed with prostate cancer.

  • In New Mexico, prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among American Indian men and the second leading cause, after lung cancer, among non-Hispanic white, Hispanic, and African American men.

  • Prostate cancer is often slow growing. For many men, prostate cancer will never become a serious health problem.
