Workgroups

Workgroups may be formed as appropriate to address specific issues related to implementation of the Cancer Plan. Membership in workgroups is open to Cancer Council members as well as the public. Current workgroups include:

  • Data Workgroup — This workgroup is responsible for enhancing the overall quality and availability of cancer data in New Mexico by assessing where gaps in data sources and collection methods exist, and developing collaborative approaches to fill those gaps through information and resource sharing. For more information contact Jane Cotner at 272-5191.
  • Communication Workgroup — This workgroup’s tasks are to increase awareness, extent of distribution, utilization and support of the NM Cancer Plan; and promote the NM Cancer Council as a vehicle through which individuals and organizations collaborate to implement the goals and objectives set forth in the NM Cancer Plan. For more information contact Christine Brown at 222-8609.
  • Albuquerque Cancer Coalition — A coalition of cancer support agencies, hospital treatment centers and governmental agencies uniting to inform the community of resources, to educate, to advocate and to meet the needs of cancer patients and their families. For more information contact Mary Ellen Kurucz at 243-3618 or Blaire Larson at 259-9583, or visit their website at www.nmcca.org/acc.
  • Colorectal Cancer Workgroup — This workgroup is working to increase colorectal screening across New Mexico for people ages 50 and up using any of the following tests: Fecal Occult Blood Testing (FOBT), Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, Dual Contrast Barium Enema (DCBE) or Colonoscopy. This workgroup operates under the Clinical Prevention Initiative, a partnership of the New Mexico Department of Health and the New Mexico Medical Society, and focuses primarily on improving the quality and enhancing the delivery of clinical prevention services. For more information contact Jane Cotner at 272-5191 or Rich Hoffman at 256-2727.
  • Prostate Cancer Workgroup — This workgroup is working to increase awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of informed decision-making for prostate cancer screening throughout the state, through the development and implementation of public and professional education, and patient support and referral services. For more information contact Tom Mims at 222-8617.
  • Policy and Advocacy Workgroup - The mission of the New Mexico Cancer Council Policy Advocacy Workgroup is to develop recommended policy and advocacy priorities in support of the New Mexico Cancer Plan that can be communicated to the New Mexico Legislature and other relevant groups via the New Mexico Cancer Council.
  • Membership Workgroup – The membership workgroup anticipates, plans for and recruits new membership for the New Mexico Cancer Council. The workgroup’s efforts focus on building Cancer Council membership to facilitate growth and innovative partnerships. Both traditional and non-traditional partners alike can develop new approaches to existing challenges by complimenting other organization’s strengths or creating new relationships (and therefore new infrastructure) where none may have existed before. Applications for membership are accepted by the Membership Workgroup on an ongoing basis. For more information on Council membership or to participate in this workgroup, contact David Vigil at 841-5836.
  • Survivorship Workgroup – The current activities of the survivorship workgroup entail assessing and compiling resources that relate to cancer survivorship in select counties in New Mexico. This information will be maintained as part of a comprehensive online resource directory that links people to information about available cancer-related services offered throughout the state.
